cep 810

I am adding this to my blog just to remember this technology. I made this as a intro to a project in CEP 810

Wicked Problem Project

I wanted to design an online class to prepare the students for college and a better use of technology in the classroom.  I started with implementing a pretest, movie/tutorial and a posttest in my computer programming class. My school only offers one online class for the students and I felt this was a class that could be a good opportunity for the students. Being an elective course this could allow the students not only another elective but the opportunity to use technology and freedom to complete the State of Michigan’s online requirement.

This implementation will allow the students to be able to go back and review any tutorial/movies, assignments and presentations that they might need for a better understanding of the material.

Overall my experience went smoothly, the only bump in the road was that I did not set the date right on post test. The students were not able to access the test. After this discovery I went into Edline and fixed this and the student’s were able to complete the test. The response from the students was great. They enjoyed the freedom to complete this assignment online. They even asked for more of the assignments to be added to Edline. Some of them even thought it would be fun for them to make presentations and share them to Edline for further learning.

The evidence was the completion of the assignment and the positive feedback. The grades also showed that it was a success. They all scored above 80% on the post test and enjoyed the use of technology. No one had any problems using Edline or accessing the material posted (after I fixed the date).

I plan to implement more assignments and have this class up and running in the fall. Although it is too late in the year to offer this as an online class I will include all of the material online, this will allow a better opportunity for next years class. I will be able to monitor this class to find out if I need to change anything before I actually run a fully developed class online.

Group Leadership Final Project

What tool did your group use to deliver the PD tutorial? Why?
Our group used SlideRocket as our tool to present our Group Leadership Final Project. To develop our short video clips we used Jing. We used iWisoft Flash/SWF to convert the (.swf) files from Jing to (.avi) files in order to upload the files to non-flash videos. Some of the videos that are used in our presentation are linked from YouTube. There is also a real-time Twitter link that displays updates.

What did you learn during the development process of the final product?
As a group we planned to use PowerDirector, a photo editing tool, to tie all the elements together. It was good for trimming the videos but we were not happy with the results. PowerDirector had limited features with less then perfect quality. Kit was familiar with SlideRocket, we decided to go with SlideRocket as our final presentation tool.

Kit and I had great communication during the entire project. We communicated through, email, post on discussion forums, web conferencing and cell phones. We never had a problem or miscommunication within our team. Kit and I discussed our group project and supported each other on other class assignments.

What would you do differently if you had to develop a similar product again?
Honestly, this was a great experience and there isn’t anything I would change. I am sure if there were more team members it would have been more difficult collaborating and dividing up the work. Since, there was only the two of us it was easy to communicate and complete the assignment.

Prfessional Learning Plan

Data Visualization

What tools did I try?
I explored photoshop, google sketchup and wordle.
Photoshop was interesting to explore. A teacher teaches this in my class once per day. I was always interested in learning some techniques but never made the time.
Google sketchup is used to make 3D sketches. It seems easy to use and it is used in many different industries (architecture, construction, design, engineering, etc.)
Wordle creates word clouds. It allows you to type/paste text, add your URL from your blog, webpage or RSS feed. I typed in my URL to my blog, you can change the language, I tried to change my words to Japanese (my husband has been working there for the past year) it was not available. You could also do a word count, to see how many times the word was used in your text.
What are you representing in the visualization you created?
I decided to try glogster and made a glog about myself. Not very many tools are related to my classes but glogster had triangles, compasses, protractors and scales (rulers) to decorate my poster. As I was designing my poster I was thinking about how I can incorporate this into my class and I came up with a few ideas. This year I had my student’s do a traditional poster, each student was to research a different type of engineering position and now I am going to have them do it in glogster. I am going to have my students design a poster about them at the beginning of the year and hang them around the room. I will have them include things like family, sports they play, interests and what colleges they plan to attend.

Poll Everywhere

I teach at a private school and we did not change our spring break to the beginning of April. We have been off since April 19 and will not return until May 2. I sent a text to poll a few friends/parents to view their results. This assignment has fallen on a bad week for me.
results….

Mobile Learning

What tools did you try?
I enjoyed exploring cell/camera phones and ipods in education. I feel these tools would be the tools I would like to incorporate into my class.

What ways are you thinking about integrating mobile technology into YOUR classroom?
I would like to incorporate Poll Everywhere into my classroom. I think the student’s would enjoy the in interaction in class and see the result immediately. I would like to use the poll in class for short answer or multiple choice questions. By viewing and discussing the student’s immediate results will make the assignments more exciting to the students. Although we have a ban on cell phones in class I plan to talk to my administration to see if I can test them out in my classroom. I feel there are appropriate times that cell phones can be incorporated into a lesson.

Camera phones in education. I think my student’s could use their camera phones to take pictures of products that they would like to design for their class project. They could also use this technology to capture bad designs. This technology could spike their interest and creativity. Being able to capture images and share those with the class could mean more involvement and collaboration. The student’s could take a picture of a product write about what is good or bad and add it to their blog.

What challenges (or inspirations) do you foresee?
The problem that I foresee is that the student’s will want to continue using their phones in class and will not want to use pencil and paper. That is not such a bad thing. I am going to compare how many students have cell phones to how many students have a pencil on them in class.
